14 hurt as villagers clash over water

Beed, Maharashtra, Mar 4 (UNI) At least fourteen people were injured after two groups clashed in Shirur tehsil of this district over release of water from an irrigation project.

Police opened fire in the air and burst three teargas shells to disperse the clashing groups.

Police said the incident occurred at Pandul village in Shirur tehsil this morning when a group of villagers from nearby Sakpalpimpri village went to meet Irrigation Department officials demanding that water from Narayangad water project be released to their village since they had paid the requisite water charges.

The villagers of Pandul village, however, opposed the release of water the eater from the project. A few Pandul villagers pelted stones at the Sakpalpimpri villagers, leading to a clash between the two groups, police said.

At least 14 people from both the villages suffered injuries in the clash, the police said. The injured were shifted to the nearby Beed Civil Hospital and Raymoha rural hospital, police said.

Acting Superintendent of Police Subhash Mohekar visited the village after the incident.
