Mysore, Mar 3 (UNI) Thousands of people are thronging the town hall premises, where a chicken and egg mela has been organised by the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) and Animal Husbandry department to allay the fear of the masses about consuming chicken in the wake of the bird flu scare.

Police had to resort to a mild lathicharge to control the crowd when chicken and egg dishes were served to the people gathered. The dishes were prepared by the Mysore District Poultry Association along with the district Animal Husbandry department and various poultry farms.

The mela was inaugurated by Mysore Urban Development Authority Commissioner Nagaraj.

NECC Mysore Zone Chairman Satish Babu told UNI that there were 91 poultry farmers in the district and the loss was estimated at Rs 40 lakh per day. Owing to the bird flu scare, sales had dropped by 80 per cent in the State and the loss was Rs three crore per day. The industry had a turnover of Rs 35,000 crore in the country and Rs 3,000 crore in the State alone, he added.
