South Zone defeat Central by 80 runs
Jaipur, March 3 (UNI) Brilliant centuries by V Sivaramakrishan (158) and captain Venugopal Rao (103 not out) helped South Zone beat Central Zone by 80 runs in the Deodhar Trophy tie at the SMS stadium here today.
Asked to bat first, South Zone scored 327 for four in their allotted 50 overs and then dismissed Central Zone for 247 in 50 overs. This is the second victory of South Zone who had beaten East Zone by three wickets at Indore. Central Zone, playing without Mohammed Kaif, Suresh Raina and Piyush Chawla who were doing national duties at Nagpur, suffered their third successive defeat.
Central Zone made a shaky start losing two early wickets for 17 and thereafter their batsmen could not accelerate the rate of scoring. Abbas Ali and Ravikant Shukla batted well adding 128 runs for sixth wicket, but it was too late and the partnership between the two was broken on when Ali was removed by Venugopal Rao caught by Sivaramakrishan. He made 73 runs off 88 balls, which included six fours and two sixes. Shukla kept on batting well at the other end and remained not out on 94 facing 91 deliveries. He hit seven fours and two sixes.
R Vinaykumar, S Suresh Kumar, C Raghu and Venugopal Rao each took two wickets for South Zone.
