Govt to examine problems of handloom weavers
New Delhi, Mar 3 (UNI) The government today said a high-level committee had been formed to examine problems being faced by handloom weavers in Andhra Pradesh and suggest steps to remove them.
Minister of state for parliamentary affairs Suresh Pachouri told the Rajya Sabha that the handloom development commissioner is taking the issue seriously.
His response during zero hour came as TDP's R Chandra Sekar Reddy said as many as 432 weavers died during May 2004 to August 2005.
The starvation deaths were due to reduction in subsidies, he said the problem is persisting despite ambitious central and state government schemes.
