Porbandar, Mar 2 (UNI) Life came to a stands till in Porbandar today following a bandh call issued by the workers of the Saurashtra Chemicals Private Limited (SCPL) protesting the lay offs.

While most of the educational instituations, business establishments remained closed, no untoward incident was reported, the police said.

Nearly 2000 employees of the SCPL were agitating to protest the closure of the chemical plant and the lay off ordered by Nirma officials, who recently took the charge from Birla Group.

Meanwhile, Opposition leader in Gujarat Assembly Arjun Modhwadia told UNI over phone that his party was supporting the agitating workers and said that the plant should immediately start.

''The company has no right to closure the plant and to relieve the employees from the company,'' he said. The state government should immediately intervene in this matter, he demanded.

Nearly 2000 employees of the Saurashtra Chemicals Private Limited (SCPL) had taken out a rally in the city on February 28 and had submitted the memorandum to the district collector of Porbandar.
