Army provides 'light' to quake-ravaged area in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 3: The Army has helped in restoring electricity in the earthquake-ravaged Kamalkote village in border area of Uri, a defence spokesman said today (Mar 3, 2006).

The village was severely affected by the devastating temblor which struck both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) on October 8 last year, killing tens and thousands of people and rendering millions homeless.

The Gorkha Battalion under the aegis of Uri Brigade decided to undertake the education related projects on priority basis keeping in mind the March deadline for reopening the schools.

The spokesman said the Army also helped in restoring the power supply to about 30 houses in the Kamalkote village through a 5 KW micro hydel project at Parthinala in a record time.

The unit also set up a computer laboratory hardware at the Government Girls High School, Bani besides provided furniture to the Government Middle School, Basgaran.
