Lyngdoh Panel Hearing At New Delhi Mar 6-7
New Delhi, Mar 2 (UNI) A government committee on setting up norms for elections to university students unions will be in New Delhi on March 6-7 to meet members of the public.
Headed by Former Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh, the committee will meet people on those two days between 11.00 a.m. and 5.00 pm.
Those interested can meet the committee by appointment on March 6 or till lunch time on March 7 and from 02.30 pm to 5.00 pm that day without appointment.
The meeting venue : National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, NCERT Campus, 17-B, Sri Aurobindo Marg, New Delhi-110016 (Telephone # 011-2686 3070).
The committee was set up by the Human Resource Development Ministry after a Supreme Court order dated December 12, 2005 to examine and recommend on student union elections in universities, colleges and other higher education institutions.
Its Convener is Association of Indian University Secretary General Dayanand Dongaonkar and members include Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Zoya Hasan, Centre for Policy Research president Pratap Bhanu Mehta, National Institute of Education, Planning and Management director Ved Prakash and Retired deputy comptroller and auditor general I P Singh.
The Committee is examining : -- Criminalisation in student elections; -- Financial transparency and limits of expenditure in such elections; -- Eligibility criteria for contestants; and -- Instituting a forum to address grievances and disputes arising out of student elections as regards procedural fairness, eligibility of candidates or violations of norms.
The Committee will also examine aspects of elections that affect campus academic atmosphere.
