New Delhi, Mar 1 (UNI) Rajya Sabha members today called for joint efforts by the Centre and state governments to check Naxalite movement in the country and demanded compensation for dependents of the tribals killed in yesterday's blast trigerred by extremists in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh.
The demand for compensation by the Centre was raised by Congress member Motilal Vora and was supported by Digvijay Singh of the Janata Dal (United) and members belonging to other parties, including the BJP.
Earlier, the House witnessed uproarious scenes while raisng the issue during zero hour. Congress' Mohsina Kidwai blamed the state government for the incident, saying it did not provide protection to the people and that there has been a spurt in the Naxalite movement during the last four years.
Congress' Moolchand Meena, also held the state government responsible for the incident.
BJP members including Mr S S Ahluwalia, Mr Balbir Punj and others stood up and lodged vociferous protest at these remarks, saying that the Congress members were not interested in the issue itself.
Mr Nilotpal Basu of the CPI(M) intervened to say that the incident was very tragic and the members should not politicise it.
He said the House should have a structured debate over the issue.
Mr Vora, while sharing the concern of Mrs Kidwai over the incident, suggested that the Centre should take the initiative for compensating the kin of the victims.
JD(U)'s Digvijay Singh seconded his demand and said the state government should also compensate the victims.
Other members cutting across party line also supported the demand.
He said the issue was too grave and complex to be left to the state government to tackle it. The Centre should come out with a comprehensive policy to tackle the Naxalite menace not only in Chhattisgarh but in all affected states.
