Centre to release 1 lakh MT of wheat through FCI under OMSS

New Delhi, Mar 1 (UNI) To stabilise prices of wheat in the open market, the government today decided to release one lakh metric tons of wheat under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) through the Food Corporation of India (FCI) as the first instalment in March 2006.

While 10,000 MTs would be released each for Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu Maharashtra; 5000 MTs each for Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal, J&K, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Gujarat.

4000 MTs would be released for Uttaranchal and 3000 MTs each for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

FCI had earlier released 5.23 lakh MTs of wheat under OMSS in January and February.

The OMSS releases have helped in increasing supplies of wheat and in stabilising the wheat prices in the open market while the wholesale prices of wheat have declined, the retail price of wheat in Delhi has also declined by Rupee one per kg, an official release here said.
