Ruling MNF ahead in Village Council elections
Aizawl, Feb 27: The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) has bagged 295 of the 556 seats in the six districts in the village council elections held on February 24.
While reports are still pouring in from the district headquarters, local administration department, which deals with village councils, said today (Feb 26, 2006) that the overall result showed the MNF with an overwhelming majority with the Congress trailing far behind.
The latest reports indicate MNF has formed 295 village councils while Congress has 30 village councils. The Congress splinter group, Mizoram Congress Party, has made its first mark in Village Councils(VC's) elections by forming six VC's, five in Mamit district and one in Aizawl district.
Hmar People's Convention has five village councils, four in Aizawl district and one in Kolasib district. The Mizoram People's Conference has so far managed only a solitary village council while ZNP managed only two councils.
Meanwhile, there are 81 village councils, where no single party has been able to form the council. In another 32 VCs, coalition councils have been formed. There are several councils where independent candidates have made it to council seats over party candidates.
