Road accidents claimed 3600 lives in Kerala yearly: Muneer

Written by: Staff

Kozhikode, Feb 26 (UNI) Kerala accounted for an estimated 3600 deaths in road accidents every year, Public Works Minister M K Muneer quoting official data said today.

Pedestrians and two-wheelar riders were the main victims of the accidents, he told reporters after the inauguration of Calicut bypass phase III here.

Clogging of roads following manifold increase in the vehicles during the recent times were the major cause of accidents, the Minister said.

He said the state, which accounted for an estimated 25 lakh vehicles, needed improved multi-lane roads so that accidents could be reduced drastically, he said quoting a study.

While keeping in mind the ever increasing accidents, the state government had mooted Express Highway project, but had to shelve the scheme following a propaganda campaign by certain quarters highlighting environmental issues, the minister added.

However, he felt that the project was still relevant if the accident rate was taken into account.
