Pondy to provide best infrastructure: Gov

Pondicherry, Feb 26 (UNI) Lt Governor M M Lakhera has said the Pondicherry Government' aims to provide the best infrastructre facilities in the union territory to attract more industries and improve the tourism potential.

Stating that rapid changes had taken place in various sectors during the last five years with the launch of several developmental and welfare schemes, Lt Gen Lakhera said the administration hoped to make Pondicherry a role model for the whole country.

During the period tremendous progress had been achieved in the fields of education, health, tourism, roads and information technology-related services in the culturally and historically rich territory, he said while interacting with journalists.

Speaking about various developmental activities launched by the government, he said the administration had decided to develop the Pondicherry port with a view to allow bigger vessels to ply on the waters.

The project will be implemented with private participation and the construction of jetties completed in a phased manner. The port will serve as an alternative to Mangalore and Chennai Ports.

He said action had already been taken to develop a port in Kariakkal through private investment for the overall economic development and prosperity of the region.

The commercial activities at the Pondicherry port had generated employment opportunities besides additional revenue to the port as well as various central and state departments.

Steps have also been taken for establishment of a container freight station in Pondicherry Port in collaboration with Container Corporation of India for the benefit of local industries and for establishing a duty-free port.
