Leftist unions to burn US President's effigies

Jalandhar, Feb 26 (UNI) Joint Platform of Mass Organisations, a joint forum of about 40 Leftist employees, farmers and labourers' unions, will hold demonstrations and burn effigies of the US President George W Bush in Punjab during his India visit on March one.

The decision to oppose the US president's visit to India was taken in view of the latter's alleged imperialistic policies and 'brutality' in Iraq and other parts of the world, forum spokesman Kulwant Singh Sandhu said.

Accordingly, demonstrations would be held and effigies would be burnt at different places in the state, including Amritsar and Jalandhar, between March one and three.

The organisation would also hold demonstrations in all districts of the state between March 17 and 31 in protest against price rise, unemployment and other problems related to people, Mr Sandhu said.
