High-level panel to look into weavers' problems: Minister
Bangalore, Feb 26 (UNI) The Centre has constituted a high-level committee to recommend an action plan to the government for the welfare of the weaving community which was in distress, Union Minister of State for Planning M V Rajashekaran said here today.
Speaking after felicitating the senior Congress leader T V Maruthi, Mr Rajashekaran said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had recently convened a meeting of high-level officials belonging to textile and labour ministries during which he suggested the setting up of a committee to examine the problems of the weavers.
Based on the commitee's report, the Centre will come out with an 'Action Plan' to benefit several lakh members of the weaving community.
While acknowledging the acute problems being faced by the weaver community, including marketing, increased cost of production and acute poverty, the Union Minister said the proposed action plan would bring succour to the industry.
