Special package to poor people living near Kolleru lake

Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, Feb 22 (UNI) The West Godavari district administration has chalked out a special package with an outlay of Rs 51.98 crore for economic development of poor people living in world famous Kolleru fresh water lake area in the district.

The district administration had taken up 'Operation Kolleru'' to renovate the lake to its prestine glory on the guidelines given by the Supreme Court's empowered committee.

The District Collector Lav Agarwal conducted District Consultative Committee meeting with the Bankers here yesterday at the Collectorate as part of the guidelines.

Addressing the meeting, Mr Agarwalsaid that under the special package, people living in Kolleru lake area would get loans for taking up self-employment ventures.

As part of the package, the district administration would sanction 11,574 units to the poor and weaker sections of people living in the Kolleru belt and bed villages. Two units will be sanctioned for each family, he said.

Mr Agarwal said the objective of the package was to protect villagers from the clutches of some landlords and to improve their living conditions.

Expressing concern that some influential people in Kolleru lake area were spreading rumours and misguiding the poor people that the implementation of Government Order (GO) 120, would affect their livelihood, the Collector reiterated the administration would clear their doubts by creating awareness on the GO.

Stating that the government would provide a new lease of life to the poor people living in the lake area, he asked the bankers to provide loans to them.

He said as part of the Rs 30 crore package sanctioned by the state government for the benefit of the poor people of Kolleru, Rs six crore have already been distributed in the first phase.
