Chandra Grahan: Religious ritual or superstitions, people follow them

On the night of August 7, India, along with a few other countries may be able to experience some effects of the Lunar eclipse.

A partial lunar eclipse will take place on 7 August night and will be visible from across India. Despite lunar eclipse being a scientific affair, people in India follow few things religiously during the Chandra Grahan.

Starting from 10.52 pm, the full moon will enter the Earth's shadow in space and create a spectacular celestial phenomenon, which is commonly known as partial lunar eclipse. This will be the first properly visible lunar eclipse this year in India. Sky gazers can head to planetarium in their city to witness the celestial activity as it takes place tonight.

People in India will see the Penumbral and Partial lunar eclipse on Monday night. The Penumbral eclipse will begin at 9.22 PM and end at 2.20 AM on August 8. The partial eclipse will begin at 10.55 PM on August 7 and end 47 minutes after midnight. The maximum eclipse can be seen at 11.51 PM, astronomy organisation SPACE India said in a statement on Sunday. The total duration of the Penumbral eclipse is five hours and one minute and that of the Partial eclipse will be one hour and 55 minutes.

People pray to God before and after the lunar eclipse.

General Sutak timing begins at 12:44:06 PM (Aug 7) and ends at 00:48:09 AM (Aug 8).

Sutak for kids, old and sick begins - 19:11:30 PM (Aug 7) and ends at 00:48:09 AM (Aug 8).

During the lunar eclipse, prayer is the best activity to undertake.

People in India usually don't consume food or water, cook or travel during eclipses.

Moreover, leftover cooked food is not eaten after the eclipse is over.

Do not eat 9 hours before the lunar eclipse begins. One can drink water.

People avoid performing any important work or deal during grahan time.

No meals should be offered to God during the pre-eclipse period.

People follow the Sutak and refrain from doing certain activities in this period ahead of the eclipse. This period is considered inauspicious.

Children, old and sick people should take extra precaution and not consume food during this period. Even pregnant women are advised to remain indoors until the eclipse gets over.

People think pregnant women should not touch sharp objects like knives or needles during an eclipse, because it will cause a cleft lip in the unborn child.

At the time of eclipse, people place darbha grass or Tulsi in food items and over water storage units until the eclipse ends.

In order to fight off this toxicity, people are advised to pray to the almighty during the timing of the eclipse and chant mantras. The mantra, ‘tamoya mahabheem somsuryavimardan, hemtarapradanen mamah shantiprado bhavah' is said to bring in peace and harmony to the house and avoid all negativity.
