Corruption: PM wants to end harassment of honest officers

Manmohan
New Delhi, Oct 10: At a time when Congress-led UPA government is fighting hard to come out clean against several charges of corruption levelled against them, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wants a review of existing laws to ensure honest public servants aren't harassed while the corrupt are booked.

Prime Minister spoke on the issue of corruption at a seminar of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi on Wednesday, Oct 10. Manmohan Singh said that the government was contemplating to amend the Prevention of Corruption Act to make it more effective.

"We are also considering amendments to the Prevention of Corruption Act not only in view of the judicial ruling but also with the purpose of filling certain gaps in the legislation. We are also examining how the act can be amended to protect honest public servants more effectively," Manmohan Singh said.

"Mindless atmosphere of negativity and pessimism that is sought to be created over the issue of corruption can do us no good," the Prime Minister added. He also said that the government stands firm in its commitment to ensure probity and accountability in public work.
