Thane, Jun 4 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Sanjay Kelkar as their official candidate for the Konkan Graduates Constituency in the Maharashtra Legislative Council polls, which are slated for June 24.

Talking to reporters at the party headquarters here last night, Dr Ashok Modak, who would complete his term in the Council, said that he had been working hard to retain the seat during the last two terms so that their official candidate Sanjay Kelkar will get elected in the polls.

He was accompanied by Thane MP Prakash Paranjpe, former MP Jagannath Patil and Thane unit chief of the party Prabhakar Sawant.

Some of the issues that were afflicting the constituency included creating employment opportunities for the educated unemployed and the failure of the administration to give relief to those affected by 26/7 deluge and the 2002 floods in Palghar.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Paranjpe who belongs to the Shiv Sena, said that his party would totally support the BJP and there were good signs of victory with a comfortable margin.

He believed in the forthcoming election, the voting percentage of the educated youth would be very high as compared to the other elections.

Meanwhile, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) declared Nilesh Chavan as the official candidate for the polls.

Nilesh, the son of Harishchandra Chavan, is a close confident of NCP President Sharad Pawar.
