  • Legends Beliefs
    Cheraman Perumal was the ruling emperor of Kerala when the construction of a temple at Udayanapuram began. Meanwhile, a gem-studded nose ring of Devi went missing from the Meenakshi temple in Madurai. The priest, who was innocent, took refuge at the feet of Devi.On the 40th night, Devi appeared in the priest's dream and ordered him to leave. He followed a divine light to Kumaranalloor, where a temple was under construction. The light entered the sanctum sanctorum, and a divine voice declared the place for Devi, not Kumara.Perumal returned to Kumaranalloor with Devi's idol. He brought an idol from Vedagiri, believed to be made by Maharshi Parasurama. A Brahmin sage installed the idol and vanished. The priest from Madurai became the temple's priest, and his successors worship Devi even today.

    The temple is situated in an area of 15,000 square metres. The main gopuram faces east, with high walls and three other gopurams in each direction. The temple view presents a divine picture with a golden dhwajom and balickal pura with carvings of many sculptures.Inside the nalambalam, sreekovil, and main mandapam are paths made of carved stones. The temple of Shiva is on the right side of the main sreekovil. Bhadrakali temple is on the south, with a full stretched surrounding path on carved stones.The outer walls of the sanctum sanctorum are decorated with murals of Hindu gods, goddesses, and incidents from Ramayana and Mahabharata. Natural colours and medicinal plants were used to colour these frescos.
