Who Is Prashant Veer? Why CSK Went All Out for UP All-Rounder at Rs 14.20 Crore in IPL Auction 2026

Uttar Pradesh's young all-rounder Prashant Veer scripted history at the IPL Auction 2026 on Tuesday, December 16, as Chennai Super Kings went all out to secure his services for a staggering Rs 14.20 crore.

Coming in at a base price of just Rs 30 lakh, the 20-year-old emerged as the most expensive uncapped player in IPL history, underlining CSK's long-term vision ahead of the new season.

From UP T20 League to IPL's Biggest Uncapped Buy

Prashant Veer first caught the spotlight during the UP T20 League, where his all-round performances for Noida Super Kings stood out. In the 2025 season, he was named the Emerging Player of the Season after scoring 320 runs in ten innings at an average of 64 and a strike rate of over 155.

His contributions were not limited to batting, as he also claimed eight wickets in as many matches, maintaining an impressive economy rate of 6.69 and an average of 21.75.

Those performances reportedly earned him a call-up to Chennai Super Kings' trials, where the franchise closely monitored his development before making a decisive move at the auction.

A Rare Combination of Power and Control

Despite limited experience at the senior level, Prashant has already made an impact in T20 cricket. In nine official T20 matches, the left-handed middle-order batter has scored 112 runs at a strike rate of 167.16, showcasing his ability to clear the ropes with ease. With the ball, his left-arm spin has proved equally effective, fetching him 12 wickets at an average of 16.66 so far.

This dual skill set is believed to be a major reason CSK were willing to invest heavily, especially after trading Ravindra Jadeja to Rajasthan Royals ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. Within the franchise, Prashant is seen as a long-term all-round option who could eventually fill the void left by Jadeja.

'Miller', Yuvraj Singh and the CSK Connection

Nicknamed 'Miller' by one of his coaches early in his career due to his aggressive batting style, Prashant has often spoken about his admiration for Yuvraj Singh. His fondness for Chennai Super Kings and MS Dhoni has also been well documented, making the auction outcome even more special for the youngster.

"I would absolutely love to play for Chennai Super Kings because it's my dream to spend at least one season with MS Dhoni. I would get to learn a lot from him, especially his calmness, since he also bats in the lower order, just like I do. There's so much I could learn from him. If I get an opportunity to play for any team, CSK would be my preferred choice," he told Cricket 900.

Prashant Veer did not remain alone at the top of the uncapped players' list for long, as CSK later matched the same price to sign Kartik Sharma. Still, the bidding war for the UP all-rounder marked a significant moment in IPL history, reflecting how franchises are increasingly willing to back young domestic talent with massive investments.
