India vs Zimbabwe: India Set Second Highest T20 World Cup Total With 256/4, Smash Most Sixes In A Match
India delivered a batting masterclass in a high-pressure Super Eight fixture of the T20 World Cup 2026, piling up a massive 256 for 4 against Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

With qualification hopes on the line, the hosts produced their best total of the tournament and the second-highest score in the history of the Men's T20 World Cup.
Flying start from new opening pair
India's tactical decision to open with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson paid immediate dividends. The pair attacked from ball one and added 48 runs in just 22 deliveries, unsettling Zimbabwe's seamers early.
Samson could not convert his start, but Abhishek Sharma carried on the momentum and brought up his maiden half-century of the tournament. He smashed 55 off 30 balls, setting the platform for a massive total.
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza had opted to bowl first after winning the toss, expecting early assistance from moisture in the pitch. Instead, the bowlers were put under relentless pressure throughout the powerplay.
Middle order keeps the tempo high
The scoring rate never dipped after the powerplay. Ishan Kishan chipped in with a brisk 38, while Suryakumar Yadav played a trademark counter-attacking cameo of 33 off just 13 balls.
India crossed the 200-run mark comfortably as Zimbabwe struggled to find control. Having already conceded 254 against West Indies in the Super Eights, the bowling attack endured another difficult outing at Chepauk.
Hardik and Tilak provide explosive finish
The late overs turned into a spectacle as Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya launched a brutal assault. Their boundary-laden partnership ensured India finished strongly and surged to 256/4, leaving Zimbabwe with a daunting chase.
The total now stands as the second-highest ever in Men's T20 World Cup history.
Highest totals in Men's T20 World Cup history:
- 260/6 Sri Lanka vs Kenya, Johannesburg 2007
- 256/4 India vs Zimbabwe, Chennai 2026
- 254/6 West Indies vs Zimbabwe, Mumbai 2026
- 235/5 Ireland vs Oman, Colombo 2026
- 230/8 England vs South Africa, Mumbai 2016
- 229/4 South Africa vs England, Mumbai 2016
Net run rate boost crucial for semifinal hopes
India not only secured a dominant position in the match but also significantly strengthened their net run rate. With the semifinal race tight, the margin of victory could prove decisive.
The team now faces a must-win path going forward. Every remaining Super Eight game becomes vital, starting with a crucial encounter against West Indies in Kolkata. A convincing win here would keep India firmly in contention for a semifinal berth.
