How many times have you heard someone say, "I have a slow metabolism" or "No matter how much I eat, I don't gain weight because I have a high metabolism" I am sure you might have come across these phrases quite a few times in your life, where in response you just idly nod your head. However, have you ever invested any time to understand what it exactly means? Let me explain it to you - Metabolism is often considered to be a single thing but in reality, it is the combination of many things, it is the sum of all bodily functions and chemical processes taking place within one's body. The total amount of energy expenditure is understood as the most straightforward definition of Metabolism.

Now the question arises what is energy expenditure? It is nothing but the process of food and drinks being converted into energy within the body, a complex process indeed where the calories ingested and the oxygen inhaled combine with each other so that they can be released in the form of energy. Shikha has been on this journey for 3 years now, she weighed 110 kilos initially and now she has reached the number 50 on the weighing scale. This level of achievement will sound astonishing to many ears. She did not achieve these results in one day; she started making changes by reflecting on her eating habits and eminently increased her time in doing more physical activities. As she has said on numerous occasions that "It's never too late to start", this means that everyone should focus on correcting the relationship with their body so that they can live a fulfilled life. A few tips to boost metabolism are listed below -

  1. Increase protein intake in every meal you eat as it can prevent overeating by providing a sense of fullness in the stomach. It also takes more calories to digest in the intestine than carbohydrates or fats which leads the body to build fat-burning lean muscle tissue.
  2. Drink more water instead of taking sugary drinks. Hydration is essential for anybody to function properly; hence it is necessary for optimal metabolism.
  3. Exercise as well as weight train yourself. This is an important factor as the process of adding mass to your muscle is a proven way to burn calories while being at rest. On the other hand, a high-intensity cardio routine of 20 to 30 minutes can help an individual in burning calories in active mode.
  4. Avoid crash diets because they will negatively affect your metabolism. At the time of Crash, diets might seem like an easy way to lose weight but it is not, it will lead your body to lose muscle in the long run.
  5. Focus on making crucial lifestyle changes, for example, make sure you get 8 hours of sleep; you shall invest your time in activities that will reduce your stress and strengthen your body. Lack of sleep can affect the level of glucose in body and alter hormones resulting in regulating the metabolism.

If you incorporate these tips into your daily routine it will help you to start controlling your metabolism, which will eventually help you lose weight and stay with more energy.
