When 80 Minutes Of Waiting End In Death: Eyewitness Recalls Horror Of Noida Techie’s Fatal Fall Into Pit

A heartbreaking incident in Noida's Sector 150 has raised serious questions about safety and emergency response. A 27-year-old software engineer, Yuvraj Mehta, lost his life after his car fell into a deep, water-filled pit at a construction site. Despite being alive for nearly 80 minutes after the accident, he could not be rescued.

Yuvraj stood on top of his sinking car, crying for help and repeatedly calling out to his father, who was present at the spot. Police personnel, fire brigade teams, SDRF, and later NDRF officials reached the location. However, no one entered the water to rescue him.

Rescue Teams Arrived, But No Rescue Happened

Officials reportedly cited poor visibility due to fog, extremely cold water, and the presence of iron rods inside the pit as reasons for not entering the water. While trained rescue teams waited, a delivery boy attempted to save Yuvraj by throwing a rope into the pit. His effort failed, but his attempt stood out as the only active rescue effort at the scene.

At around 1:45 am, Yuvraj's cries for help stopped. He drowned just a few metres away from his father, who stood helplessly watching the tragedy unfold.

Dangerous Construction Site Ignored Despite Complaints

The accident took place around 12:20 am when Yuvraj's Grand Vitara car broke through a damaged boundary wall and fell into a nearly 70-foot drain or pit dug for construction work. Local residents said they had raised complaints earlier about the unsafe condition of the site, but no action was taken by the Noida Authority.

Only after Yuvraj's death was debris dumped at the spot to block the dangerous opening, triggering public anger over delayed action.

Noida Authority Takes Action After Public Outcry

Following the incident, the Noida Authority took disciplinary action against officials. According to a statement quoted by news agency PTI, the authority terminated the services of a junior engineer, Naveen Kumar, who was part of the Noida Traffic Cell. The decision was taken on the orders of Noida CEO Lokesh M.

In addition, show-cause notices were issued to other officers and employees responsible for traffic management and safety in and around Sector 150.

The authority stated that failure to follow safety norms at construction sites would not be accepted. All concerned departments have been directed to re-check safety arrangements at ongoing construction projects to ensure such incidents do not happen again.

Who Was Yuvraj Mehta?

Yuvraj Mehta was a resident of Noida and worked as a software engineer in Gurugram. He was the only earning member of his family after his mother passed away two years ago. His retired father is now left alone, struggling to cope with the loss and haunted by his son's final cries for help.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning how help could reach the spot, yet a life could still be lost due to inaction.
