Banks Open Or Shut? Check What’s Open Or Shut In Maharashtra During 3-Day Mourning After Ajit Pawar’s Death

Maharashtra is in deep shock following the tragic death of Ajit Pawar, who died in a plane crash near Baramati on Wednesday morning. Soon after the news broke, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a public holiday for the day and declared three days of state mourning from January 28 to January 30.

Calling it an irreparable loss, the Chief Minister said the entire state is grieving the death of the 66-year-old leader, who played a major role in Maharashtra's political and administrative life.

What Will Remain Closed During Mourning

All state government offices, administrative departments, and public sector undertakings remained shut on Wednesday. While some essential administrative work may continue with limited staff, no new official decisions will be taken during the mourning period.

Educational institutions across the state, especially in Mumbai, Pune, and Baramati, have suspended classes. Several examinations have also been postponed. Government-organised cultural programmes, entertainment events, and public celebrations have been cancelled.

Political parties have paused rallies and public meetings as a mark of respect. In Baramati and parts of Pune, people observed a spontaneous bandh to honour the late leader.

Essential Services Continue to Function

Despite the shutdown, essential services remain fully operational. Hospitals, ambulance services, police, fire brigades, and pharmacies continue to function normally.

Despite the 3-day state mourning, banks are functioning normally across the state. There is no official bank holiday announced for the mourning period.

Public transport services such as Mumbai local trains, BEST buses, and MSRTC buses are running, though minor disruptions may occur in high-security areas. Banks, ATMs, and markets selling daily necessities like milk and groceries are also open. Many private companies, especially IT firms in Pune, have advised employees to work from home.

Leaders Pay Tribute to a Veteran Politician

Speaking emotionally, Chief Minister Fadnavis described Ajit Pawar's death as a personal loss. He remembered him as a fearless and hardworking leader who made lasting contributions to the state's development.

Senior leaders across parties have expressed grief, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who spoke to the Chief Minister to convey their condolences.

Ajit Pawar was the nephew of veteran leader Sharad Pawar and cousin of MP Supriya Sule. He served as Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister six times under different governments, including those led by Eknath Shinde.

A large crowd gathered at Baramati hospital, where his mortal remains were brought. Several senior leaders, including Praful Patel, reached Baramati to pay their last respects. The final rites will be decided after discussions with the family.
