Yogi Government Announces Cashless Treatment Scheme For 1.37 Lakh UP Teachers And Their Families

The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has announced a major welfare measure for the state's higher education teachers by introducing a cashless medical treatment facility for them and their families.

With the official government order now issued, nearly 1.37 lakh teachers working in universities, aided degree colleges and self-financed institutions will be covered under the new healthcare benefit. Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries will be able to receive treatment worth up to ₹5 lakh every year.

1.37 lakh teachers to benefit under new healthcare decision

In a significant push towards strengthening the welfare of educators, the Higher Education Department on Thursday formally approved the rollout of the cashless treatment facility for teachers across multiple categories of institutions in Uttar Pradesh. The move is expected to bring substantial financial relief to teaching staff who have long sought broader health security similar to state employees.

The decision covers teachers serving in state universities, non-government aided degree colleges and self-financed colleges, making it one of the most extensive healthcare support measures announced for the higher education sector in the state in recent years.

Regular and self-financed teachers brought under one umbrella

As per the order issued by Special Secretary (Higher Education) Girijesh Tyagi, the scheme has been designed to include both regular teachers and those teaching under self-financed programmes. Along with faculty members from state universities and aided degree colleges, the benefit will also be extended to teachers employed in recognised private self-financed degree colleges.

This broad inclusion is being seen as a landmark move because it ensures that even non-regular teaching staff, who were often left out of similar state-backed benefits, will now receive direct access to government-supported healthcare coverage.

Families also eligible for cashless treatment up to ₹5 lakh

Under the new arrangement, teachers and their family members will be entitled to cashless medical treatment of up to ₹5 lakh in a year. The benefit will be available at government hospitals as well as private hospitals empanelled under the scheme.

For many teachers, especially those dealing with costly medical emergencies, the facility is expected to reduce dependence on personal savings, borrowings or debt. Teacher bodies had been raising the demand for such a system for a long time, arguing that educators should receive health protection on par with other government-supported employees.

Teacher associations call it a milestone for the education sector

The announcement has been welcomed widely by representatives of the teaching community. Uttar Pradesh Self-Financed College Association president Vinay Trivedi expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay, saying the decision could become a turning point for the sector.

He said the inclusion of teachers from self-financed colleges reflects the government's sensitivity towards their long-standing concerns and sends a positive message to the wider education community.

At the same time, the Higher Education Department has begun discussions on how to implement the scheme quickly. Officials are currently working on preparing a database of eligible teachers and planning the issuance of health cards, so that the cashless treatment facility can begin at hospitals as soon as possible.
