B-2 Stealth Bomber: Why It’s America’s First Choice For Deep, Undetectable, Devastating Strikes
In the wake of President Donald Trump's announcement that the U.S. had successfully carried out strikes on three key Iranian nuclear facilities-Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan-the spotlight once again turns to the aircraft likely used in the operation: the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber.
Though the administration did not confirm specific aircraft, U.S. media and defense sources point to the deployment of the B-2, the world's most advanced strategic bomber. Designed during the Cold War to penetrate Soviet air defenses and hit hardened targets, the B-2 remains unrivaled in stealth, payload flexibility, and global reach.

What Makes the B-2 Bomber So Special?
The B-2 Spirit, developed by Northrop Grumman, is a long-range, heavy-payload stealth bomber capable of flying 6,000 nautical miles without refueling. It is designed to penetrate the most sophisticated enemy air defenses and strike heavily fortified targets.
Here's why it remains America's first choice for high-value, long-distance missions:
1. Can the B-2 Be Detected by Radar?
The B-2 is virtually invisible to enemy radar. Its unique flying-wing design, radar-absorbent materials, and low-heat emissions give it an exceptionally small radar cross-section-around 0.001 square meters, equivalent to a bird. This means it can fly deep into enemy territory undetected, even when carrying heavy payloads.
2. What Is Its Payload Capacity?
The B-2 has a maximum payload capacity of 40,000 pounds (20 tons). Depending on the mission, it can carry a wide variety of conventional and nuclear weapons. Some standard payload configurations include:
2× GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOPs)
80× 500-pound Mk 82 bombs
16× 2,000-pound JDAMs
16× nuclear B61 or B83 bombs
The flexibility of its internal bomb bays allows it to be customised for precision strikes, area bombing, or bunker-busting missions.
3. How Many Bunker Buster Bombs Can It Carry?
The B-2 is the only U.S. aircraft capable of deploying the GBU-57 MOP, the Pentagon's most powerful conventional bomb. It can carry two MOPs per mission, each weighing 30,000 pounds. The GBU-57 is designed to penetrate 200 feet of earth or 60 feet of reinforced concrete, making it ideal for destroying nuclear sites like Fordow, which is buried under a mountain.
4. Why Is It the First Choice for Long-Distance Bombing?
Stealth: It can evade radar and air defenses better than any bomber in history.
Range: With aerial refueling, it can strike any target in the world from U.S. soil.
Payload: Capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear warheads.
Accuracy: Integrated with satellite-guided systems for pin-point precision.
Psychological edge: The mere presence of a B-2 bomber in a region is a strategic signal of overwhelming force.
Strategic Role in Iran Strikes
In Saturday's mission-targeting Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan-the B-2's use of MOPs was critical. Fordow, a key Iranian uranium enrichment site built deep within a mountain, required this specialized capability. Trump's statement that a "full payload of BOMBS" was dropped on Fordow strongly suggests that GBU-57s were deployed from B-2 bombers.
