Gas Leak Triggers Fire at ONGC Oil Well, Entire Andhra Pradesh Village Evacuated

A major gas leak at an operational oil well triggered a fire and forced the evacuation of an entire village in Andhra Pradesh's Konaseema district, sending panic through nearby areas on Tuesday. The incident unfolded during repair work at the well, prompting swift action from local authorities and emergency teams to prevent further escalation.

Gas blowout during repair work sparks fire

The oil well, operated by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, is located in Irusumanda village in the Razole area of Konaseema. Officials said the well had temporarily halted production and repair work was underway using a workover rig. During the operation, a sudden blowout released a huge volume of gas mixed with crude oil, shooting high into the air.

According to local officials, the leaked gas soon caught fire, with flames erupting at the site and alarming villagers and authorities alike. Thick clouds of gas and smoke spread rapidly across Irusumanda and nearby areas, enveloping the region like dense fog.

Power restrictions and safety warnings issued

As a precaution, authorities made repeated announcements through loudspeakers, instructing residents of three surrounding villages to avoid using electricity, switching on electrical appliances, or lighting stoves. The advisory was aimed at preventing any additional ignition sources while the gas leak and fire were being tackled.

Villagers evacuated as tension grips area

Panchayat officials and the local administration urged residents to leave the area immediately. Many villagers evacuated their homes in haste, while several also moved their cattle to safer locations. The atmosphere remained tense as people waited for updates on when it would be safe to return.

Emergency response and monitoring continue

ONGC personnel rushed to the spot to control the leak and contain the fire. The affected area has been cordoned off, and emergency measures are in place to ensure public safety. Senior district officials, along with ONGC authorities, are stationed at the site and are closely monitoring the situation as efforts continue to bring it fully under control.
