Amid LPG Shortage, Here’s What The Indian Government Says - What Will Be Prioritised And What Won’t

The Government of India has introduced new measures to ensure a steady supply of domestic LPG cylinders as global geopolitical tensions continue to disrupt fuel supply chains.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, which said steps have been taken to boost LPG production and prioritise supply for households.
Authorities said the measures aim to prevent shortages and control hoarding during a period of uncertainty in global energy markets.

Refineries Asked To Increase LPG Production

The ministry has directed oil refineries across the country to increase LPG production to meet domestic demand.

According to the official statement, the additional LPG produced by refineries will primarily be used to support household cooking gas supply.

The move comes as global disruptions in fuel shipments have created pressure on LPG imports, prompting the government to strengthen domestic production.

Household LPG Supply Given Top Priority

Officials said the government has decided to prioritise LPG supply for households to ensure that families continue to receive cooking gas without disruption.
To manage demand and prevent stockpiling, the government has introduced a 25-day gap between LPG refill bookings.

Earlier, consumers were allowed to book a new cylinder sooner, but the extended waiting period has been introduced to prevent hoarding and black marketing during the supply pressure.

Imported LPG Reserved For Essential Sectors

The government also announced that imported LPG supplies will be prioritised for critical sectors that require continuous fuel access.

These sectors include:

• Hospitals
• Educational institutions

Officials said ensuring uninterrupted LPG supply to these institutions is important because they provide essential services to the public.

Committee Formed To Review Supply Requests From Businesses

Commercial sectors such as restaurants, hotels and other industries have also raised concerns about LPG availability.

To address these concerns, the ministry has formed a committee of three Executive Directors from oil marketing companies.

The committee will review requests and representations from businesses seeking LPG supply during the current shortage.

The panel will decide how available LPG can be distributed among non-essential commercial users while maintaining priority for households and critical sectors.

Government Monitoring Energy Situation

The ministry said the steps are precautionary measures taken in response to geopolitical disruptions affecting fuel supply.

Officials emphasised that the government is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary actions to ensure that LPG remains available for essential needs.
By increasing domestic production and prioritising key sectors, authorities aim to maintain stability in LPG supply while global energy markets remain uncertain.
