Google AI Investment In India Expands Healthcare, Language Tech And Sustainability

Google has outlined fresh investment and research plans for India’s artificial intelligence journey, with new money and partnerships aimed at healthcare, agriculture, sustainability, education, and digital public infrastructure. The company expects these projects to cut healthcare costs, strengthen local innovation, and support developers working on Indic language and sector-specific AI tools.

The announcements came during the “Lab to Impact” dialogue, organised with the India AI Impact Summit 2026. During the event, Google detailed multi-million-dollar funding for Indian institutes, startups, and non-profit organisations. The company also highlighted how its models, infrastructure, and clean energy deals could support India’s long-term digital and climate goals.

Google AI funding India for healthcare innovation and medical mapping

A major focus lies on healthcare research. Google will provide $400,000 to develop India’s Health Foundation Model using MedGemma, working with AIIMS and IISc. The model will focus on dermatology, support hospitals in OPD triage, and convert clinical records into the FHIR format. It will also map more than 400,000 health facilities on Google Maps.

According to research shared at the dialogue, these health-focused AI efforts are expected to save India about ₹390 billion every year in healthcare expenses. By improving diagnosis, digitising records, and improving access to mapped facilities, planners expect better outcomes in public hospitals and quicker response times for patients across regions.

Google AI funding India for institutes, centres, and language technologies

Google’s academic investments cover several leading campuses. The company will deploy $8 million to four AI Centres of Excellence at IISc Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Ropar. These centres plan to apply AI in fields such as non-communicable diseases, urban governance, agriculture productivity, and improved learning outcomes in education.

For language research, Google is allocating $2 million to IIT Bombay to set up the Indic Language Technologies Research Hub. The hub aims to advance tools across Indian languages, improving translation, speech recognition, and digital access. Alongside this, Google has uploaded 22 Gemma models on AIKosh, India’s open AI platform for developers.

Google AI funding India for startups, farmers, and rural advisory tools

Indian startups are a separate pillar of the plan. Google will support Gnani.AI, CoRover.AI, and BharatGen with $50,000 each to build Indic language AI models. Wadhwani AI will receive $4.5 million to work on multilingual applications such as HealthVaani and Garuda, and deliver agriculture advice through the AgriVaani app.

Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education, Government of India, said, “The four AI Centres of Excellence have been conceived as a coordinated national research mission, advancing foundational research, responsible AI, and applied solutions that serve public purpose, and contributing to our larger aspiration of Viksit Bharat 2047.” This underlined the government’s expectations from the partnership.

Google AI funding India with clean energy and long-term AI vision

On the sustainability front, Google has tied up with ReNew Energy for a 150 MW solar project in Rajasthan. Power from this project will help run Google’s operations using clean electricity. The company expects this will cut carbon emissions associated with AI infrastructure and make related data centres more climate-friendly.
