London, Oct 12 (Reuters) Following are some of the major events to have occurred on October 13 since 1900: 1923 - Turkey's Grand National Assembly declared Ankara the country's capital.

1943 - Italy declared war on its former Axis partner Germany in World War Two.

1972 - A Soviet Ilyushin-62 crashed near Moscow airport, killing all 176 on board in what at the time was the worst disaster in civilian aviation history.

1977 - A Lufthansa airliner flying from Majorca was hijacked over the Mediterranean by four Palestinians. It was later flown to Mogadishu, Somalia, via intermediate stops including Oman, where the pilot was killed. German commandos stormed the plane on the night of Oct 17/18.

1988 - The Shroud of Turin, revered by many Christians as Christ's burial cloth, was shown by carbon-dating tests to date from the Middle Ages.

1990 - St Basil's Russian Orthodox cathedral next to the Kremlin in Moscow hosted its first service for more than 70 years.

1997 - Tony Blair met Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, the first meeting between a British prime minister and a Northern Irish Republican leader for more than 70 years.

2004 - Investigators conducted their first scientific exhumation of ''killing fields'' in Hatra, northern Iraq, discovering hundreds of bodies that they hoped would help convict Saddam Hussein of crimes against humanity.

2006 - China's former first lady Wang Guangmei, persecuted during the chaotic 1966-76 Cultural Revolution with her husband, President Liu Shaoqi, died aged 85.
