London, Jul 21 (ANI): British Member of Parliament Philip Hollobone, who is trying to push a Bill outlawing the burka after similar moves in Europe, has said that 95 per cent of the country is right behind him.
He revealed he's had an "overwhelmingly positive response" in hundreds of letters and emails for outlawing the full-face veil.
The backlash against the burka intensified on Tuesday as Spain debated whether to become the third European country to ban its use in public, the Daily Star reports.
France and Belgium have already banned the burka, while Syria became the first Muslim country to introduce a ban to discourage Islamic extremism. ollobone said his Bill faced huge obstacles, but said: "I've had overwhelming support from my constituents. I've had hundreds of letters, calls and emails - 95 per cent of them positive."
"I went to White Chapel in east London on Tuesday and saw quite a few women with the full-face veil. I only saw them talking to other women. There was no integration," he added.
Hollobone said he has not had many abusive messages following his calls for a ban, and insisted the move was not "un-Islamic". (ANI)
