According to legend, his daughter, Poompavai, was resurrected by the saint Thirugnana Sambandhar from her burnt bones. The temple's name, 'Virupaksheeswarar,' derives from 'Viroopam,' meaning 'contradicting nature,' referring to Shiva's third eye. Sage Kutsa is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva here, and Sundarar witnessed the Nataraja Thandavam at this site. The temple houses inscriptions dating from the 11th to the 16th century, with the oldest from the reign of Veera Rajendra Chola (1063–1070 CE), mentioning the donation of cows.
