The temple was originally constructed by Pallava King Parameshwara Pallava II around 1049 AD. Subsequent inscriptions indicate contributions from various periods: in 1136 AD, a devotee named Sivanai Muzhuthum Udayal donated a perpetual lamp; in 1168 AD, during the reign of Rajaraja Chola II, a devotee named Sethirayan donated 32 cows; and in 1181 AD, during Kulothunga Chola III's reign, records mention temple maintenance activities. The temple underwent renovations in 1360 AD by Vijaya Kampana, and the outer compound wall was built by the Shankaracharya of Kanchi Mutt.
