The Veerabhadra Temple in Lepakshi is dedicated to Virabhadra, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. As mentioned in the Skanda Purana, it is one of the Divyakshetras, making it a significant pilgrimage site. The temple is renowned for its giant footprint, believed to belong to either Sita or Hanuman, and the striking seven-headed serpent shading the lingam sculpture. Another architectural marvel within the temple is the hanging pillar, which appears to defy gravity.
The Veerabhadra Temple was built in 1530 CE by Virupanna Nayaka and Viranna, governors under the Vijayanagar Empire. Belonging to the Veerashaiva Vani warrior merchant class, they played a key role in its construction. The temple, recognized in the Skanda Purana, is an important pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva.
