Historical records, including inscriptions from the reigns of Nrupathunga Pallava (861 CE) and Kulothunga Chola I (1074 CE), refer to the deity as Moolasthanathu Mahadevaar and Agastheeswarar, respectively. The temple suffered destruction during the Golkonda Nawab invasion and was restored in 1977 by Sri Namachivaya Chettiar.
