The land where Vaikunda Chella Pathi stands was originally owned by Sankaran Thamby from Thiruvananthapuram until the 1940s. According to legend, Chellan Samiyar, a devoted palmyra climber, was instructed by Lord Narayana in a dream to construct a temple. Lacking land, he was assured that arrangements should proceed and land would be provided in due time. Subsequently, Sankaran Thamby and his mother received repeated dreams instructing them to donate land to Chellan Samiyar. Complying with these visions, Thamby donated the land in 1944. The current temple was constructed in 1959 and inaugurated by Pattathu Ayya Krishnanama Mony.
