According to the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu descended as Vamana to restore Indra's authority over Svarga, taken by Mahabali, a benevolent asura king. Vamana, in the guise of a short Brahmin, requested three paces of land from Mahabali. Vamana then revealed his identity and enlarged to gigantic proportions to stride over the three worlds. Mahabali offered his head for the third step, and Vamana placed his foot on the humbled monarch, banishing him to the netherworld.
