Tripura Sundari Temple History and Significance

Tripura Sundari Temple, also known as Devi Tripureshwari Temple, is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Tripura Sundari, an incarnation of Parvati. Located in Udaipur, Tripura, about 55 km from Agartala, it is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, believed to be where Sati’s right foot fell. Built in 1501 CE by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in the Bengali Ek-ratna style, the temple sits atop a hillock shaped like a tortoise, known as Kurma Pitha. The sanctum houses two black stone idols—Tripura Sundari (5 feet) and Chhoto-Ma (2 feet), an idol of Goddess Chandi. The temple hosts a grand Diwali Mela, drawing over 200,000 devotees annually.

In the late 15th century, King Dhanya Manikya had a divine vision instructing him to worship Goddess Tripura Sundari on a hill near Udaipur. However, the site already housed a Vishnu temple, creating a dilemma. After receiving the vision again, he realized that Vishnu and Shakti were manifestations of the same Supreme Deity. Thus, in 1501 CE, he established the Tripura Sundari Temple, symbolizing harmony between Vaishnavism and Shaktism.

Kalyan Sagar pond, is home to the rare Bostami turtles, considered sacred. As the Tripura Sundari Temple is a Kurmapith, resembling a turtle, and was once a Vishnu temple, the turtles—linked to Vishnu’s Kurma avatar—hold spiritual significance for devotees.
