After the submersion of Dwaraka, the idol was retrieved from the sea near Chettuva in Kerala by local fishermen and was subsequently installed at Triprayar by the local ruler, Vakkayil Kaimal. The temple's architecture features intricate wood carvings and mural paintings depicting scenes from the Ramayana. Historically, the temple was managed by prominent Namboodiri families before being transferred to the Cochin Devaswom Board.
