Established in 823 CE by Cheraman Perumal, Trikandiyur Shiva Temple is one of the 108 Sivalayams. The temple's management has transitioned through various hands, including the 48 Mussath families known as Shivadiwjanambi, the Alathiyoor Namboothiri Sabha, the Vettathu King, and eventually the Samoothiri under the British East India Company. A notable feature is the large temple pond, constructed to mitigate fires believed to be caused by the heat from Lord Shiva's third eye. The temple was destroyed during Tipu Sultan's invasion and later rebuilt by Mandayapurathu Krishna Menon, with assistance from Vella Namboothiri of Panniyoor and Hydrose Kutty of Chavakkad.
