The Thumpamon Vadakkumnatha Temple is an ancient temple near Pandalam in Pathanamthitta, Kerala. It has two Sreekovils, both round in shape. The temple's history is linked to the evolution of Kerala's temples and its social and cultural history.
Historians divide the history of Kerala temples into four stages: earliest shrines, Jain temples, Buddhist temples, and the revival of Hinduism. The Thumpamon temple belongs to the third and fourth stages. During the Buddhist era, many Hindu temples were once Buddhist shrines.
Shankaracharya and Brahmin scholars revived Hinduism between 800-1000 AD, wiping out Buddhism from Kerala. The temple was later managed by local Namboothiri Brahmins. The temple lost its glory during the Dark Ages (1300-1700 AD) but remains a significant religious site.
