According to Hindu mythology, the temple has existed through all four Yugas, known as Sreesylam in Krita Yuga, Swamy Sylam in Treta Yuga, Bavyasylam in Dvapara Yuga, and Sivasylam in Kali Yuga. It is believed to be referenced in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Historical records indicate that Uthachi, mother of Thirumalai Nayak, performed penance near the temple to seek offspring, resulting in the birth of a son named after the deity. Thirumalai Nayak later presented a golden Angi and crown, each weighing 182 tolas, to the deity during his visit. Sage Vyakarapadhar is also said to have worshipped Lord Shiva at this temple.
