According to legend, a shepherd named Theembil Adhipan discovered a self-manifested Shiva Lingam (Swayambu) while cutting grass, as blood was seen oozing from a stone. Upon clearing the area, he found the Lingam and began worshipping it, leading to the establishment of the temple. The temple has undergone renovations during the reigns of the Chola and Pandya kings. Sage Vyakarapadhar is also believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva at this site.
