The Surkanda Devi Temple is linked to the legend of Sati, the wife of Shiva. Sati's father, Daksha, did not approve of her marriage to Shiva. During a grand sacrifice, Sati was not invited, leading her to immolate herself. In grief, Shiva carried her body, and pieces fell across the land, forming Shakti Peethas. The temple marks where Sati's head fell.
