Sundareswarar Temple History and Significance

The temple's origins trace back to the Chola dynasty, with significant contributions from Kulothunga Chola in the 7th century. To alleviate this, Goddess Mahalakshmi, in the form of a cow, worshipped Lord Shiva at this site, leading to the place being named 'Kopuri' (derived from 'Ko' meaning cow in Tamil), which later evolved into 'Kovur'. The temple also holds musical significance, as the renowned Carnatic composer Saint Thyagaraja visited and composed the 'Kovur Pancharatnam', a set of five songs in praise of Lord Sundareswarar.
