Sri Venkataramana Temple, also known as Padutirupathi, was built by the Goud Saraswat Brahmins in Karkala, Karnataka. They migrated from Goa due to Portuguese invasions. The temple's history dates back to the 15th century when Jain Bhairarasa Odeyars ruled the region. The exact date of the temple's installation remains unknown.
The temple was installed on 25 April 1537. The Goud Saraswat Brahmins settled in Karkala after migrating from Goa. They brought with them the idol of Lord Venkataramana. The temple was built with the support of the Jain king, who provided land and resources.
During the 1500s, dacoits attacked Karkala, leading the GSBs to hide their valuables, including the idol. After the dacoits were defeated, the GSBs returned but could not retrieve one of the idols. A Mulki resident found it and installed it in a local temple. The GSBs were reassured by a dream that the Lord would return to Karkala.
In 1537, a saint arrived in Karkala with an idol of Lord Vishnu. The GSBs were instructed in a dream to install this idol. The temple was renovated in 1699-1700 and again in 2017. The temple follows rituals similar to those at Tirumala.
