The temple's origin is linked to a legend involving a Brahmin who, during his pilgrimage, had a divine vision of Lord Krishna at this site. Following this vision, he purified himself in the Thodupuzhayar river and offered Nivedyam by lighting a lamp. This event occurred on the day of Chothi in the Malayalam month of Meenam. Subsequently, the Raja of Keezhmalanadu constructed a shrine and consecrated an idol of Lord Krishna. The temple is renowned for the Chothioottu feast, held annually, offering free meals to pilgrims. Additionally, it houses one of the earliest and largest wedding halls in central Travancore, known as 'Krishna Theertham'.
