Sree Dharmashastha Temple History and Significance

The temple was established by Pandya King Manavikrama Pandyan, who founded the Poonjar Dynasty. Notably, it features chuttuvilakku (lamps around the outer wall) carved out of stone, a rarity in Kerala. This unique feature is attributed to the Tamil artisans who accompanied the king, skilled in stone carving due to the scarcity of wood in their homeland. The temple also houses wooden carvings depicting various epics and legends. The ghats for bathing, with stone steps descending into the clear river waters, and a large Ootupura (dining hall) used for marriages and functions, are other significant features.
