The temple's origins trace back to the 6th century, during which it was known as Thiru Thinai Nagar. The name 'Thiru Thinai Nagar' is derived from a legend involving a farmer named Periyan and his wife, who were devout followers of Lord Shiva. They had a practice of feeding a Shiva devotee before partaking in their own meals. One day, unable to find a devotee, they encountered an old man who agreed to accept their hospitality only after performing some work. The old man ploughed their field, and miraculously, the crops grew instantly, ready for harvest. After the meal, the old man revealed himself as Lord Shiva and blessed the couple. This event led to the place being named 'Thiru Thinai Nagar,' which later evolved into Theerthanagiri. The temple is also associated with King Veerasenan, who, suffering from leukoderma, was cured after bathing in the temple's tank, Jambava Theertham. In gratitude, he is believed to have constructed the temple.
