The Singeeswarar Temple was constructed in 976 A.D. by Aditya Karikalan II, the elder brother of the renowned Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola. The temple's Rajagopuram (main tower), compound wall, and a 16-pillared mandapam were added in 1501 A.D. during the reign of Krishnadevaraya, with contributions from Ariyanatha Mudaliar, a native of Mappedu who served as the chief officer under the Vijayanagara kings. The temple is associated with several legends, including one where Lord Vishnu, in his Mohini avatar, worshipped Lord Shiva at this site to regain his original form. Another legend narrates that Nandi Devar, also known as Singhi, played the Mridangam during Lord Shiva's Ananda Tandava at Thiruvalangadu but missed witnessing the dance. To fulfill Nandi's desire, Lord Shiva performed the dance again at Mappedu, earning the deity the name Singeeswarar.
